Tarleton,
Lancashire
There's lots to see
and do in Lancashire. A hot air balloon
flight may be perfect for a birthday gift
or special celebration.
The large village of Tarleton is a thriving
community situated on the A565, 10 miles
east of the coastal town of Southport (Merseyside),
and the A59, 10 miles from Preston (to the
north) and Ormskirk (to the south).
Tarleton is part of a Parish that also includes
the three hamlets of Sollom, Holmes and
Mere Brow. The River Douglas (named the
River Asland along this section) flows for
3 miles along the east side of Tarleton
to join the River Ribble. The Leeds & Liverpool
Canal is almost parallel to the River Douglas
at Tarleton and joins the river at Tarleton
Lock.
The area to the south of Tarleton is used
mainly for arable farming. The area to the
north, close to the banks of the Ribble,
is mainly marshland. There are many plant
nurseries (greenhouses), retail fruit and
vegetable shops, and even an Ostrich Farm
in the Tarelton area. There are sports facilities
at Tarleton High School and bowling is also
played in season.
