The
old town of Appledore situated on the North
Devon coastline at the mouth of the River
Torridge, is about 6 miles (10 km) west
of Barnstaple and a short distance from
Bideford. It has a skilled workforce, some
of whom fitted the upper part of 2 square
rigged tall sailing ships, the ‘Prince William’
and the ‘Stavros S. Niarchos’ at its shipyards.
Appledore is reached along the A386 (Great
Torrington / Bideford) and the A39 (Barnstaple).
To the north of Appledore lies the golf
course, Northam Burrows Country Park, The
North Devon Museum, and sand banks to the
south of the channel used by the Lundy Island
ferry.
